cygnet vs snapper

Human observers tend to sympathize with the beautiful swans and cute cygnets, despite the fact that they're not a native species, and the cobs (males) are territorial bullies who harass nearly every other kind of water bird. I accept that other species prey on the little swans, even if those other species are less visible and less adorable. Over the years, we’ve watched broods of up to seven cygnets dwindle to one or even none. This morning, I happened to witness what must have been a snapping turtle or some other strong animal grabbing from below. This time, the little one managed to resurface and paddle to safety, and the parents escorted the little ones away from the scene.
